Corn, Beans, Chilies

Oaxaca is a place with a rich and unique food culture. The tradition of eating street food is alive and well here, with plenty of tasty options to choose from. From tamales to tlayudas, there’s something for everyone. And if you’re looking for something a little more filling, there are also plenty of mesmerizing places to eat at in Oaxaca. Whether you’re looking for traditional Mexican food or something a little more adventurous, you’ll find it all in Oaxaca. Street vendors can be found lining the city streets, their carts overflowing with fresh produce and beautiful goods. They come out early to sell tacos, roasted corn on the cob (called elote), ice cream-filled sopes, or simply water bottles that they fill themselves. I could spend hours exploring all of these vendors but my favorite are those who sell fruit. They set up under tarps next to their carts full of fruit like mangoes and bananas and will cut up a whole pineapple right in front of you. Fresh squeezed orange juice is also available at many spots around town as well as horchata – my favorite drink when I’m too hot!

The other common type of street food in Oaxaca is prepared foods that you can purchase to eat on-the-go. Tlayudas, which are like giant tortillas covered in beans, cheese, meat and avocado are a great option if you’re looking for something fresh. They’re easy to carry around but usually big enough to split with someone so it’s possible to get full without spending too much money. When I’m walking around town with friends I sometimes get tamales or huaraches as well. Both are pieces of flat corn dough topped with different kinds of fillings. Tamales typically have some kind of meat or fish inside while huaraches (my favorite) have beans and lettuce along with guacamole for an added boost.

Cooking with friends & family

Food is the best way to learn about a culture. And when in Oaxaca, you cannot go wrong with any street food. But be sure to taste the tasty quesadillas, tlayudas, and tamales. You won’t be disappointed. The street food will not only give you a unique culinary experience, but you’ll have a chance to make friends as well. Enjoying a meal with one’s hands is not only a blast but it’s a great way to make friends. When traveling in groups or solo, stopping at small stalls on the way to get some street food is a good idea. The most important thing is to ask the chef before you order anything whether it contains ingredients you usually don’t eat. If you’re in the mood for a sit-down meal, try one of Oaxaca’s mouth-watering soup dishes or dishes made with mole poblano.
On the other hand, just make sure to taste a lot of the regional cuisine you come across on your trip!

Mmm, Mexican street food! It may sound odd, but it’s true. Here in Mexico, we eat at many different meals together – breakfast with family, lunch with co-workers or friends, a snack or two while out running errands – but there is a special place in our hearts for our traditional street foods. Let me introduce you to these tasty treats so that when you visit Mexico, you can enjoy eating just like we do. One very popular street food is quesadillas (or ‘quesadillas’). This scrumptious tortilla-and-cheese sandwich originated in Veracruz state and spread throughout Mexico where variations abound.

Street Style Tacos

Oaxaca is well-known for its street food, and tacos are no exception. These tasty little morsels are typically made with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients and served up on a small corn tortilla. The fillings vary depending on what’s in season, but some popular options include carnitas (slow-cooked pork), al pastor (marinated pork), and pollo (chicken). No matter what you choose, you’re sure to enjoy a delicious, authentic Mexican meal.

In addition to classic tacos, you can find plenty of other traditional Mexican dishes in Oaxaca. For example, pozole is a hearty soup made with hominy (corn), fresh ingredients like herbs and vegetables, and a base broth seasoned with spices like cumin or Chile peppers. It’s often served with meat on top or crumbled into it, along with sliced radishes, onions, cheese and lime juice. Lengua tacos are another popular option—they’re typically made from beef tongue but also feature meat from pork or chicken legs.

Tlayudas – Tortillas stuffed with anything you want

Oaxaca Street Food You MUST Try! — Chef DeniseOaxaca street food is some of the tastiest in Mexico. One of my favorite dishes is tlayudas, which are tortillas stuffed with anything you want. Tlayudas are usually made with refried beans, cheese, and meat, but you can also find them with vegetables or even just cheese. Some other common street foods in Oaxaca are guajolotes, which are grilled corn cobs topped with mayonnaise, cream cheese, or butter. Another dish you should try is mole—you’ll find it served over chicken or pork at many restaurants. It’s a sauce made with chocolate and chilli peppers that’s really tasty if you like spicy food. This city has one of Mexico’s most famous culinary traditions, so be sure to try some authentic Mexican dishes while you’re here!
