All of the buzzed-about, award-winning television shows of today will be long gone by 2022. However, NBC’s newest drama series—the one that beat out all of its competitors to win the 2022 Emmy Award for Best New Series—is in the midst of production now and should premiere sometime in late 2021 or early 2022! But what can viewers expect from NBC’s New Generation? After combing through scripts and talking to network executives, we put together this list of things we know about NBC’s New Generation so far.
First impressions are powerful
In a media landscape where your show is competing with literally thousands of other options, first impressions matter. So why not make yours a good one? Viewers often won’t give a new series more than three or four episodes to capture their attention. This means that most shows need to hook viewers right away—and also that it’s crucial for networks to know how best to create those hooks. This has resulted in an industry-wide trend toward high concept scripts. High concept refers to stories that are easily understood at a glance. They don’t need a lot of introduction and they’re simple to get across in short soundbites. High concepts are useful for pitching a show because they can quickly explain what sets the show apart and make it worth watching. can you hit it?
The concept at the heart of this show
While most television networks are still struggling to find successful shows that can appeal to younger viewers, NBC has found an answer with New Generation. The show, which follows three friends in their 20s as they try to build a business and start a family, seems likely to become one of the biggest hits on TV next year. And its ratings will only continue to rise as long as it stays committed to its focus on millennials, who have increasingly become important network viewers. Though other networks have tried in recent years with shows like Big Little Lies and This Is Us, none have come close to matching what New Generation will offer when it debuts next year. It’s not just because those other shows aren’t as good—it’s also because they don’t have access to something New Generation does: With already two hit series (The Good Place and Superstore) under its belt, NBC is now looking to benefit from cross-promoting New Generation to existing fan bases from each respective show. That way, subscribers who are already interested in NBC’s brand get more for their subscription; they not only get the opportunity to see their favorite show for free, but an entirely new series for free, too! It’s a well-executed maneuver from network executives who know exactly how to keep audiences engaged.
Behind-the-scenes production team, actors
More than 5 teams of writers working full-time to produce up to 15 new episodes per week. That’s more than one episode every day! The actors are a big part of what makes these shows so great, and they work hard to deliver high quality performances for each episode. They rehearse for hours each day and have multiple takes on every line. When they’re not rehearsing or filming, they spend time with their families, like any other person in a normal job would do. Even though there are so many people involved in making these shows, it all comes together seamlessly into a single show that millions watch each week! This is truly an incredible feat and something you should definitely tune into.
The post is written as if from an employee at NBC who is trying to hype upcoming TV series on network television. It will also include quotes from celebrities about how much they love certain upcoming series’ premieres or early seasons.
Who will watch it? Will it attract an audience?
Over the past few years, audiences have changed a lot and new TV shows have changed along with them. Things like new technology allow more people to watch shows on demand rather than live. This new creative freedom for authors means stories can be told in a myriad of ways, with a much wider selection of story lines and character types. However, not all audiences want to binge watch a show; they like to watch them at their own pace. That said, they still like to be up-to-date with what’s happening—hence why TV Guide was created! For example: when the fifth episode airs at 8pm on a Monday, it’s likely to be on a best of list for people watching later in the week or weekend. Nowadays, viewers are pickier about what they watch. When searching for a great show, be on the lookout for one that’s currently trending but has a devoted fan base eagerly anticipating every new episode.
Why will they tune in? What makes it great TV?
It’s not just a good show—it’s a hit. The new drama, set in Boston in 2027, is garnering critical acclaim and widespread attention as its first season airs. But with critics fighting over it, fans question whether it will stick around—especially when so many great shows have come and gone over time. This year’s winner for Best Drama, will it be canceled or renewed? In both cases, we think so. NBC has already ordered a second season of The Village and it’s sure to continue its success as long as there are viewers who want to know what happens next. With an ensemble cast including Tom Hanks, Mark Ruffalo, Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep, you can bet that people will tune in to see what happens next. And since they love it so much now, they’ll probably watch all seasons to follow.
Why is The Village different from anything else on TV right now? With a diverse cast of younger actors, there are also skilled veterans like Hanks and Ruffalo that fill audiences with fascination as these actors readily jump into their roles.
What else can you learn from this series?
As you watch new episodes of these future classics, look for clues about why they became so popular. It will be fascinating to look back in ten years and see how many turned out as predicted. For example, I recommend watching the series, The Good Place. The stars, Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton, are killed off in season one, but we won’t spoil how. That early shock value certainly got viewers talking—and probably helped it win that year’s Golden Globe for Best Comedy! But without spoiling too much from future seasons, their characters appear again years later… there could be something more to that than just shock value.
